52 Project: Play

Hello, it’s another post on the blog circle that includes amazing pet photographers from all around the world.  This week’s 52 Project topic is “Play!”

When I tell people that I’m a volunteer at the Santa Monica Animal Shelter, people often say they could never volunteer at a shelter because it would be so depressing.  While it can be sad to see so many great dogs and cats without homes, it’s usually overshadowed by the tremendous joy that the animals display when given some well-deserved attention.

The dogs at the Santa Monica Animal Shelter are routinely walked and given a chance to run around in the play pen.  And most do not waste this opportunity.  When it was her turn to play, this little Welsh Corgi mix couldn’t hide the excitement on her face!

Now let’s continue the fun with central coast pet photographer, Sharon Stokes!

52 Project: Kisses

This week’s 52 Project theme is “Kisses!”

When you pick Chubs up, you’re never sure if you will get a tired, reluctant kiss or a “climb your chest and attack your face” kiss.  This photo displays the latter.  :)

52 Project: Selective Focus

This week’s topic in the pet photographer’s blog circle is “Selective Focus.”

Photographers, with the use of f-stops and focal lengths, have the power to decide if they want everything to be in focus or just select areas. This is usually what people have the most fun with when they graduate from a point-and-shoot camera to their first SLR camera.

In the photo below, you can see that Chubs is in focus, while the beach behind him is so blurry that you can’t even tell it’s a beach – it’s more of a distraction-free, neutral background.

One practical use for selective focus is to convey the activity on the Santa Monica boardwalk without being too cluttered with information.

Most often, a photographer will choose to have their subject in focus while keeping the background blurry…

But, if your background is interesting, it can be fun to do the opposite!
